About Me

Abigayle has been a writer ever since her mother taught her how to hold a pencil. However, she devoted more time to reading words with her green eyes than penning them with her left hand. Inspired by a crazy dream at the age of sixteen, she set off on a journey to self-publish her first novel, Martin Hospitality. Since then, Abigayle has devoted herself to sharing what she has learned through the mediums of freelance editing and her blog theleft-handedytpist.blogspot.com ... when period drama films are not calling more loudly. None of her successes, including winning a 2017 Readers’ Favorite Award, would be possible without the support of her Savior, large family, and online community.
I am ~
  • 20 years old
  • A graduate from homeschooling. And, yes, I graduated while still 17 :D
  • The oldest of eight kiddos (2 girls, 5 boys in a row, and finally another girl. ;) )
  • An ISTJ, 5w6, Ravenclaw, green . . .
  • Christian--I attend a Bible church. And it's the best
  • The proud owner of green eyes. Be jealous
  • An alto, unless forced to be a second soprano (but we don't talk about that)
  • Terrified of arachnids and heights
  • An avid reader and editor
  • A huge fan of these thingys, whose names I always forget: ~~ update: they're tildes ~~
  • A slight grammar nerd. As in the Rod & Staff busywork kind. Yeah, it's bad, but I'm still learning
  • Pro-Oxford comma. I always tend to overuse instead of underuse commas. It just makes sense to me to have another one in there for good measure.
  • A notebook hoarder . . .
  • Left-handed in case you missed it. Because I am very proud of this, I am determined to marry a left-handed man and test my theory that it is a one-gene recessive trait and thus we could have only left-handed children, upping the worldwide ratios (although I've been told this won't work . . .)
I love ~
  • Classic vocal music. Such as Josh Groban, Jackie Evancho, Michael Buble, and Peter Hollens
  • Really good harmony. Like Pentatonix and The Canadian Tenors. And Peter Hollens again. I tend to prefer men's harmony for some reason
  • The color purple in virtually any non-traditional shade, although preferably more on the neutral side
  • Chocolate, especially with raspberries
  • Reading, writing, and editing (surprise, surprise)
  • Watching detective/crime shows and period dramas (Sherlock, White Collar, Downton Abbey, and Call the Midwife are among just a few of her favorites)
  • Winter. Texas winter just doesn't cut it sometimes :(
  • Singing. I'm not a soloist, but harmonizing with my sister is just plain awesome
  • Playing the piano. Note, I said playing not practicing. Basically, I just sight read for the fun of it
  • People in uniform. Both men and women win instant respect from me and men (I'm just going to come out and say it) also get bonus attractive points
  • Mushrooms! Actually, fungi in general. So, no, not to eat. Just to admire and photograph
  • Cheese. This I actually eat . . . all the time
~~~~~
Okay, so I know I missed something. What was it? I'll be glad to tell you more random things about myself. Do we have an awesome trait in common?
    So cool to find another young writer to network with! I am constantly surprised at our numbers. It's pretty amazing and special to find more and more people just like me out there.
    I see that we have a lot in common, starting with being the eldest of a bigger family of homeschoolers. I have four younger siblings, which isn't as many as six, and I don't consider it that big myself. I have friends with twelve (soon to be thirteen) kids, so five doesn't seem very many. xD In any case, it's really cool to meet another one of my kind. What's been your favorite part of homeschooling? And how did you get into writing and editing?
    1. Hey, Emily!
      Thanks for commenting :D Wow, we do have a lot in common. I'd have to say my favorite part of homeschooling is the flexibility. I know that's what a lot of people say, but it's true! I wouldn't be able to babysit all the time or help my dad out and things like that if I had to go anywhere on a regular basis. I have done some co-op before, but that was only one day a week.
      As far writing and editing . . . I've always written. Any story that ever popped into my head I would at least jot down on a spare piece of paper. And if it really lit my imagination, I would write a few scenes without ever taking to the time to plan it out to perfection. Now, I am trying to work on planning out and actually finishing my first novel. This will make the 3rd story I've ever finished, the first two being about 12 pages long and poorly written (about 8 and 10 years ago).
      Editing is a whole different story. I've always been a huge reader and grammar geek, so I loved to patronize my younger siblings about how they should improve their work, especially as I began learning how to do essays and such. When I started thinking about college last year, I realized that since I didn't really want to teach, editing was what I wanted to do. My mom had a friend through her birth business who was a local, Christian author. So I have edited two books for her now and that just confirmed my passion. Since their isn't a degree in editing and I would have to go the English, Journalism, or Communications route, for now I am going to keep earning money and gaining experience. The library is my best friend right now :D
      Sorry, that was a really long answer :p But thanks so much for engaging me! Do you have a blog? Do you enjoy writing or editing? Any works in progress?
    2. Found your blog! Oh my gosh, you live in CANADA?!?!? I'm so jealous! I really want to go someday :D And don't worry, I have basically 0 blogging skills, too :P I love that we both used "aspiring author" in our header! *high five*
    3. I agree that the flexibility is great. I was really thankful for that the last two years of high school.
      I definitely relate with the whole, writing just being a part of you thing. I've always loved creating stories, though it took me a while to realize I could do it as a career.
      I have had some interest in being an editor on the side of writing, do you have any tips on where to go for the experience you talk about? I am like you in being disinterested with college for furthering English education. It's so easy nowadays with the internet and such to just teach yourself things (for much cheaper!).
      Thanks for checking out my blog! I do live in Canada, I love it a lot, it's so beautiful here. Except right now not so much. It's warming up and out in the country everything melts and turns to a mudpit. It's weird though, cause it's only February and shouldn't be so warm already...
      Consider the high five reciprocated. xD I look forward to networking with you and following up on your blog. :)
    4. Honestly, most of my experience came from one woman trying to wrap up her manuscripts so she could self-publish on a deadline to her readers. If you can form relationships (part of the reason I'm doing a blog in the first place), then you get to train your eyes as you go. So swap your work for a friend's and give it a couple read-throughs! I guess I worked on siblings' essays and things like that, too, before manuscripts.
      If you want some resources, "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" by Renni Browne and Dave King is really good. It covers 12 problems to watch out for and how to get better at spotting them, complete with examples, excerpts, and exercises. However, profanity is not completely absent from their examples and they find it adds authenticity to certain characters. I would NEVER use anything like that in my novels, so if you can bypass their advocacy and occasional inclusion of that, it is really excellent and an easy read.
  4. Hullo there, Abi! I was redirected here from Katie, and I must say, I'm so glad I found you! We seem to have a lot in common! I'm a homeschooled Christian (who used to have a betta fish), an avid reader, wannabe author, and faithful advocate of the Oxford comma. (Seriously, I am a stickler for always using it.) Also, I loooove the color purple (though blue is still my favorite color) and WINTER. Ooh, and I'm also a big arachnophobe (no creepy-crawlies for me, please!), lover of these things (~~~~), and a chocolate fiend. And I'm extremely jealous of your green eyes. XD
    AND I CAN'T BELIEVE SOMEONE ELSE HAS A PUCUATION FANDOM!! (Mine is parentheses. Can you tell?)
    1. Haha! I NEVER would have guessed you were partial to parentheses! I use them quite a bit, too. (They're just so good for bunny trails and what I like to call self-commentary.) But tildes (I finally looked up the name again) are my favorite just because they look pretty and are hardly ever used in the English language.
      Congrats on being the first guy to comment! (I did notice.) I was wondering why it is almost always girls who author and comment on blogs . . . Hm, I may have to do a blog post on that! (And of course I'm going to start following your blog.)
      So, how many siblings do you have and where do you land in the mix? (I'm the oldest of seven.)
    2. Haha LOVE bunny trails! And I may have to borrow the term self-commentary...
      Yay! Thanks! *tries not to sound selfish* I love followers! :)
      And... a question? *tries not to sound untechy but fails* Is there any way I can follow your blog without email? (My email account is ALWAYS making me pull my hair out...) I mean, I know how to follow with Google Friend Connect, but other than that, I'm not sure. (I'm new to blogging also.) If not, don't worry about! I'll just bookmark this site!
      And about siblings~ (had to use that thing now) I'm the second oldest of eight. Forever envious of oldests, but I like to claim the title of tallest, which is a plus. :)
      Delete
    3. Hmm, I guess I would just do Google Friend Connect. I intend for my posts to show up there. But bookmarking works, too :D I will (hopefully) post every Saturday, starting tomorrow if I can get my parents approval on a few things.
      Ugh, I totally understand the inbox nightmare. I may have to unsubscribe from some websites that send me like 3 e-mails a day that I'm never going to read! Something else I've heard that people like is Bloglovin. I've never tried it, but it might be worth both of us looking into :D
      Hey, tallest is a nice title. My younger brother (14) has already passed up everyone except some really tall uncles who married into the family. I didn't even reach my life goal of 5'4" so . . .
    4. Oh, I meant to say that I only follow one blog via e-mail. The others I follow through Blogger (that's what I used for my blog). There's an option to follow other blogs there under Reading List. And I don't remember having to create an account? Anyway, the feed of new posts from all the blogs I follow shows up there with no notifications, so that's nice :) And I did that before I ever created my blog, so it probably doesn't matter if you use Blogger for your blog or not, if that makes sense
      To be honest, it's been a long time since I've seen some Thin Man. It's more of a childhood memory and what got me started on mysteries, but it's so classic, I'm sure I'd love it even more now!   10. (*shakes your hand* Hi Abi, I'm Savannah, nice to meet you! I found your blog through Katie Grace, and I really enjoy reading it.)
    It would seem we are alike in many ways, and you are not the only one who hoards notebooks XD. Christian, homeschooled, eldest, writer, avid reader ... we have a lot in common :D. And also, we both sing alto! My family and I are big into music and singing.
    This is a random question, but when did you start writing stories?
    1. Hey, Savannah! *shakes hand back* It's nice to meet you, too! :)
      Don't even get me started on notebooks. I am wickedly attracted to them and my cousin just brought me a new one from New York. So now I have to go through the painstaking process of deciding what to do with it :P
      Wow, we do have a lot in common! My grandfather has a choir and leads music at our church, so singing in church and choir have always been a part of my life. It's so fun, isn't it? And alto is the best part. Ever.
      Oh dear. I've been writing for at least ten years . . . Yeah, I think around 10 years. I've only ever finished two little stories (that are not worth anyone's time, but I had fun). One in 2008 about a dolphin and one in 2011 that was a mystery. Not my strongest genre ;) It's just been in the last few years that I have gotten inspiration that has stuck with me. I usually would write out the few scenes in my head (beginning, climax, end) and then be done. It wasn't until I started sharing my work with people that I really got serious and am now working on my first novel :D
      How about you? How long have you been writing?
      Delete
    2. Sometimes I'll have an empty notebook that won't get used for weeks, simply because I can't decide what to do with it! XD
      Yes, singing (especially singing alto) is awesome!
      I think I've been writing for (roughly) five or six years, but it's a but hard to remember :D. Right now I'm working on a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty.
  24. Hello! I am a Christian homeschool-girl too! And I'm 17 (= Your blog seems neat! I like how you do videos. I've been seeing your book all over the internet!! Congratulations! I hope to publish a book someday too, but it's not something I've ever done before. I working on writing one though. By the way, what does it mean to self publish? Have a nice day! Laura -PS I'm having a giveaway on my blog that you're welcome to check out!
  25. Hello, Laura! I'm glad you've found me :)
    Thanks! I've just gotten into doing vlogs (video blogging), but it's been very fun so far. I'm trying to think of new things I can do in my videos, so let me know if you have any suggestions ;)
    Really?! That's awesome! I love hearing that Martin Hospitality is everywhere :D I've been trying to filter it into everyone's media feeds and such but it can be hard ;)
    I'm glad you ask :) Self-publishing means that I basically published the book myself instead of using a corporate publishing company. I had to hire professionals or do everything myself ... I kind of did a mix of both. I used Amazon's CreateSpace company online to publish the book. You just have to input information and upload the content and the cover files and they will publish Kindle & paperback for you. Marketing is also all on me.
    If you'd like a short post that goes through the pros & cons of traditional publishing vs self-publishing (or indie publishing), read this one: http://knittedbygodsplan.blogspot.com/2017/03/traditional-vs-indie-with-jansina.html
    I'm beginning a series of blog posts on Saturday with the theme of self-publishing, so stick around and hopefully those will be helpful for you!
    *goes to check out your blog*
    Blessings on you and your writing!
  27. I'm not QUITEleft-hand... BUT IM AMBIDEXTROUS! And lol you had me busting up at the marrying a left handed guy thing. XD your,radiate will be a science experiment?! Lol
    And GAH YES about the uniforms.ive been sooooo tempted to add that to my about page (not the uniforms thing, just seeing a guy in a camp military or Air Force or maybe even navy uniform) because seriously it just triggers the 'crush' button. XD
    I'm an INTJ, Christian, oldest of seven ( six girls and a boy), avid reader, terrified of heights and (believe it or not) fake flowers. I'm completely serious. They freak. Me. Out.
    There's probably more, but that's all I can think of. XD (LOVEthis page!!!)
    1. That's awesome! Totally ;) I've actually heard that it even two left-handed people can have right-handed children :( But oh well. I don't know any left-handed guys anyway. They seem to be more rare than girls?
      Haha XD I know. I kinda forgot I had put that one there. But seriously. I have such respect for our military. Any story about something sad or heroic just *sigh* They don't get as much respect as they deserve from our ungrateful society :/
      Another INTJ!! That's awesome. I haven't met many :)
      Fake flowers. o.o I don't like them either. I guess I'm not scared of them, but it's just like ... why? I've NEVER seen tasteful fake flowers. Ever.
      Haha, thanks. It's fun to learn more about you :D
  31. I'm new to your blog. I've been seeing blog tours for your latest book. Congrats on self-publishing. I've been thinking about self-publishing when the time comes for me to publish.
    Your blog is really nice. I'm a Texas girl, too. I got excited when I saw that. The winter here sometimes isn't even winter.
    God bless you!
  33. I like your blog! I'm a fellow Christian, homeschooler, alto singer (though sometimes I sing soprano when needed), avid reader, and aspiring author. I used to be obsessed with purple.... I wanted purple everything. Now I lean more towards greens and blues. :)
    I blog over at sarahkeatts.blogspot.com.
    I'll have to read more of your blog :)
    1. Thanks, Sarah :) How neat that we have so much in common. Green is definitely my second-favorite because let's be honest, purple can be done very badly xD I'll have to check out your blog as well!
  34. My mom has a theory about which hand you use, that it’s not in the genes... but just chance and how the Parents hand you the silverware. Most parents hand the silverware to the kid in their right hand. Some kids change to the left... and the parents go, “Oh! Look! She’s left handed.” The kid would feel they did something neat... and eat left handed, this training themselves to be so. My mom would always train us to be just right handed... she said a couple of us eleven would have been left handed if she hasn’t trained us to eat with our right hands. It’s just her theory... and kinda interesting 😁
    1. I've heard of that, but my mom definitely did not encourage my left-handedness (especially since I was her firstborn). I've known several people "trained" right hand, but they never got very good at penmanship. When they switched to their left hand in high school, they excelled past what they had learned with their right. So I think it's probably a blend of genetic tendency and training :D
  36. This is TOO funny!!!! Except for the reading/writing thing, which I don't think I could survive without books, and tend to be a walking library (points for Kindle Fire!!!), you seem to be an exact opposite of me. Even the sibs. I am the oldest of seven, two boys and five gals. I don't really like winter, think blue eyes are awesome (maybe because my blue eyes are blue spectacles and think everything blue is amazing), I am pretty much the opposite personality type (I took the personality test), and think owning a tarantula would be cool/want to go indoor skydiving.
    Yet... I LOVE your blog!!! <3 <3 <3
  37. I love your about page, Abi! And your blog looks super awesome. I found it through Anika. :) Do you mind if I do an about page like this? I was practically super frustrated because I liked both the formal and informal styles, and this layout seems so PERFECT.
    That is so awesome that you're into singing. I love it, though I still have so much to learn. And green eyes are awesome. But I'm happy with my blue ones. :) I have four younger siblings. It's lots of fun.
    1. Ohhhh yes. I can't even stand to smush them. Not because I feel bad but because I don't want to get that close haha xD I really hope so, too! Maybe I can just work really hard to train all my children to be left-handed ;P We'll see if I actually have that much energy by the time I'm a mother.
  39. I love your page. But I don't think that your theory on being left-handed will prove to be true since I am the oldest of eight and so far half of us are left-handed and our parents are both right-handed. I use commas too much as well!
    1. Thanks, Kaylee! :) I love your name!
      *sigh* I know :P I'm also the oldest of eight with right-handed parents and several of us are left-handed ... so it's obviously recessive. I'm afraid it's not determined by a single gene, but who knows! xP
      Woohoo, join the overused comma club, Kaylee. ;D
